Wednesdays are usually exhausting days - 4 classes, yoga, and barely enough time in between to get anything else done. But at 8:15 pm after my last class of the day, I go home, freshen up and get picked up by my beau for our weekly-scheduled date night. Nothing fancy, just a night we have reserved so if the rest of our weeks are crazy we always have a few hours on Wednesdays to sit down, eat a meal together, watch a movie, catch up on what is going on.
So last night we decided to just take what we have in our pantries and make a stir-fry (okay, not EVERYTHING we have in our pantries. That would be gross!). I turned up with the typical broccoli, carrots, celery, brown rice, soy sauce, honey, sesame oil, sesame seeds. Andrew turned up with - deli meat? I scoffed at him and made him feel stupid for awhile, and then I gave in [edit: Andrew is by no means an idiot in the kitchen. Favorite thing about Andrew in the kitchen? he's a willing power-cleaner]. Okay, deli meat. Why not? So we started our rice, chopped our veggies and shredded the turkey and roast beef. I sauteed the veggies in some sesame oil and then added some soy sauce and honey to coat - once the rice was almost done I added the shredded deli meat and tossed it well. Rice finished, we threw that in the skillet and let it cook for another 5 minutes all together and generously sprinkled sesame seeds throughout. The verdict? Actually pretty tasty with that unexpected element. Not as good as chicken or vegetarian stir-fry, but it wasn't bad and we kept that deli meat from going to waste.
What are your favorite stir-frys to make?

Oh how delightful it would be to receive a goody from you! Especially if it's hand delivered!
ReplyDeleteI ordered some stuff online from the Certified Arkansas Farmers' Market (not membership based) that I get to pick up on Saturday. I'm getting a jar of apple/elderberry jam, a jar of pumpkin butter, 2 lbs of organic brown rice, and 1 lb of stone-ground grits for $12. We'll see if it's worth it :)
Oh, and I'm getting some watercress. I've never had any before and I'm not sure what do to with it. Any ideas?
